Learn to Skate Canskate Session

CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. This program focuses on fun, participation, and the development of basic skating skills in a positive and encouraging environment.

Skaters will learn fundamental skills such as balance, control, and agility while progressing at their own pace. As they improve, skaters will have the opportunity to earn badges and other incentives to recognize their achievements.

Lessons are delivered in a group format and led by an NCCP-certified Skate Canada professional coach. Coaches are supported on the ice by trained Program Assistants to help keep skaters engaged, active, and supported throughout each session. The coach-to-skater ratio is a maximum of 1:10.

Our sessions use teaching aids, music, games, and a variety of activities to create a fun learning environment while building confidence on the ice. CanSkate also serves as the foundation for all other Skate Canada skating programs, including figure skating, hockey, ringette, and recreational skating.

New skaters will be evaluated during the first two weeks of the program to ensure they are placed at the appropriate level. Badges are provided free of charge as skaters successfully complete each level.

Please note: CSA-approved hockey helmets are mandatory for all CanSkate participants.

Junior/Intermediate Session

The Junior and Intermediate STARSkate program is designed for skaters who have completed the CanSkateprogram and are ready to continue developing their figure skating skills. This session supports skaters transitioning from CanSkate into STARSkate, as well as skaters who are continuing to progress through the STARSkate levels.

STARSkate stands for Skills, Tests, Achievement, and Recognition. This Skate Canada program gives skaters the opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of:

• Skating skills

• Ice dance

• Free skate

• Interpretive skating

Skaters work at their own level and progress in a structured, supportive environment through a combination of group instruction, private or semi-private lessons, and independent practice time.

Private or semi-private lessons are required for this program. Skaters are expected to work independently before and after their lesson time to practise assigned skills and continue building confidence on the ice.​

The Junior level is ideal for skaters who are newly transitioning from CanSkate and beginning their STARSkate journey. Intermediate skaters continue to build on previously learned skills while working toward further development in skating skills, ice dance, free skate, and interpretive skating.

Skaters may also have the opportunity to complete Skate Canada assessments through a nationally standardized assessment system and earn recognition as they progress.

As skaters advance through STARSkate, they may choose to pursue additional skating opportunities such as synchronized skating or pairs skating.
